Sisterly Love
I am an only child so I truly have no idea what it means to experience sisterly love. Well – that is not exactly true because I have a circle of beautiful friends who are in fact my sisters – BUT I do know the difference and importance of biological ties.
My daughters are seven years apart. Sometimes it has felt like I am raising two only children. Although there is a significant difference the bond is real. One benefit of Covid was having our daughter home for a brief period of time during college.
I immediately felt that natural rhythm of their bond. They fell into their usual routine of nagging, fussing, snitching, hugging, laughing and forming alliances.
It was healthy and normal and much needed. It is not the same with my older daughter gone back to college, but it is comforting to know my daughter will never be truly alone because of sisterly love. For an Aspy mom that is essential to know.
We worry about who will love and protect them as much as we do. We worry about vulnerabilities. We worry about future independence and safety. We worry about them being alone.
Nothing is guaranteed but I am grateful they have each other.
