How to Access Funds and Community Resources

On June 25, 2020, ISPS held a presentation on equity and resources, which covered new deadlines and broader eligibility and coverage to answer frequently asked questions about sources of grants and other resources in Pinellas County.  The panel included St. Pete’s Business Resiliency Team and Arts Navigator, Pinellas Cares Fund for Individuals AND Small Business Grants – Pinellas County Economic Development, Pinellas County Urban League and the St. Petersburg Free Clinic.  ISPS would like to thank the Arts Alliance, Healthy Foundation St. Pete, Grow Smarter and Creative Pinellas for this important collaboration.

Criminal Justice Reform- Ben Crump and Sara Mollo

On June 23, 2020, ISPS had a robust conversation on Criminal Justice Reform with noted attorney, Benjamin Crump and our Pinellas County legal community led by Sixth Judicial Circuit Public Defender-elect Sara Mollo.  The forum offered a clear examination of the progress and challenges nationally and locally.  ISPS thanks Jonathan Massie for his contribution which we will feature with our reform recommendations at the state and national level.

Resiliency Program

On April 15, ISPS hosted a Zoom conversation called Closing the Resilience Gap based on the PBS Documentary Sinking Cities, Miami. 175 Participants.  Public Policy Chair Christian Moriarty, Economics Professor Patrick Luce and USGS Research Oceanographer Davina Passeri highlighted local scientific realities, policy, equity, ethical and economic concerns of sea rise.

Voting Rights, The Equity Struggle and Public Service

This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution that allows the right of citizens of the United States to vote. To commemorate the centennial anniversary, The Institute for Strategic Policy Solutions (ISPS) at St. Petersburg College will host a three-part series to examine the history of the women’s suffrage movement and the contributions of Florida Women Voters.

The conversation will provide an overview of the national and local suffrage movement with special guest speakers:

  • Dr. Peggy MacDonald, Adjunct Professor at Stetson University and Indian River State College
  • Dr. Ashley Robertson Preston of University of Florida
  • Dr. Kimberly Brown of Florida A&M University.

The remaining conversation series will focus on:

  • Series II – The contribution of the suffrage movement pre-1920 with Dr. Kimberly Brown, Assistant Professor of History at Florida A&M University
  • Series III – The achievements of the suffrage movement post-1920 with Dr. Ashley Preston, Professor at the University of Florida

World Autism Awareness Day

On April 2, a World Autism Awareness Day program featured attorney Haley Moss, the first Florida Bar member to identity as autistic. 85 Zoom Participants.  She addressed the importance of economic empowerment and workforce equity. Baker Act expert, Martha Lenderman shared spoke on challenges related to autism and the Baker Act. 

Clean Up for Climate

On April 1, in partnership with the SPC SGA, Keep Pinellas Beautiful, and Bay Pines STEM Center, ISPS launched  #CleanUp4Climate on Zoom.  33 Participants. Student fellows, Cierra Howard and Ashley Rutenbeck collaborated with in the Environmental and Sustainability students on the four-week environmental challenge.

2020 Judicial Candidates Forum

The Institute for Strategic Policy Solutions hosted a forum July 13 where the public met the 6th Circuit judicial candidates.
The event was held via Facebook Live through the Facebook page of the League of Women Voters of the St. Petersburg Area at facebook.com/LWVSPA.

Pinellas County Nonprofit Resource Update

On April 17, ISPS hosted a Pinellas County Nonprofit Resource Update on Zoom. 118 Participants. Top executive leaders of St. Petersburg Free Clinic, YMCA of Greater St. Petersburg, Pinellas Community Foundation and the Juvenile Welfare Board gave details on services being offered in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. 

U.S. Veteran Advisory Board- Congressmen Charlie Crist and Gus Bilirakis

On June 20, 2020, ISPS successfully held our collaborative with Congressmen Charlie Crist and Gus Bilirakis, who serve on the U.S. Veteran Advisory Board.  ISPS is committed to working with the Congressmen on joint VA outreach as a follow-up to the meeting.
