I did good!

I did good!

I was never good at math. In fact it was my worst subject and I hated it. These days kids have to do way too much homework from my perspective. (Full disclosure- I didn’t like homework either).

I look at the curriculum and I think how are they going to get through all this work?. It is mind boggling just to watch. Geometry-algebra-algebra-geometry in my mind looks like gibberish. And that’s why I feel so bad every time I have to tell her to crack a book and get the math done! I know many parents have been there before. Some children on the spectrum are excellent with numbers, facts and figures. My daughter happens to be one of those gifted kids. But as we branch into abstract concepts it is becoming more difficult because her brain is not wired that way. So we have constant arguments about it and when it will get done. Moreover because of my husband’s incredibly tight schedule he cannot help until the weekend- and because he is the math nerd- we wait. AND our weekends are filled with guess what -more math!

Last week my daughter had an epiphany. She finally decided if I get my work done during the week, even if it’s a struggle, I will have a break on the weekend. This was a win for all of us because we don’t get a break either. After a massive break down she completed her math successfully with an A. It was a joy to watch her enthusiasm and she said, “I did good.” My response, in an exhaustive state was, “yes you did!” To my fellow parents you are not alone!

And for the record I am so glad I don’t have to repeat math!
