Pass the torch
I spent yesterday afternoon chatting with my oldest aunt about her journey. She is a pioneer. The first to graduate from college in our family and move on to receive several- SEVERAL more degrees. I was in awe of how she led the way for my mother and other aunts to dream in an era that did not value them.
I asked – how did you do this during the rise of civil rights? What was your motivation? My aunt said my grandmother. Like many families my grandmother was foundation for our family. She in fact was not educated I was committed to excellence and everything she did. Her grace, poise and quiet strength was inspiring. When I think about her sacrifice to her family and our community – I just simply have no words. My aunt stressed that her parents’ love shaped her. She had the confidence to see beyond her horizon. After the conversation she noted it was time to pass the torch.
