This blog is late for a good reason- I had way TOO much fun! Do you remember anytime when your joy leaped off of you? Well that is how I feel every time I go back to SPELMAN for homecoming. Our space is sacred and beautiful. We embrace 18 to 80 year olds and we all enjoy our annual retreat where we can unwind and simply be ourselves.
A friend sent me a post that she said I must share and I agree.
“On the yard yesterday at #Spelman and #Morehouse Homecoming was a whole movie… The plot line was black excellence at every level compounded by generations. As Randall and I stood in awe witnessing black faces in every hue as far as the eyes can see in a 360-degree radius, we talked about how this weekend always reignites the work. It reminds us that we descend from Kings and Queens. We were educated in the pedagogy of “to whom much is given, much is required.” Because of these institutions, our work is now grounded in the guiding principles of authenticity, self-love, and tenacity. Why homecoming? Why HBCU? Why Spelman and Morehouse? There aren’t really words for this storied land. The best gift is that our education gave us each other. That no matter what happens in the mainstream world, we will always have this hollow ground to return to and ground ourselves. Let us not squander the opportunity. All I can say is #iykyk… Cheers to US and Happy Homecoming!”
I could not have said it better. I am late with this blog for a GOOD reason! Happy Homecoming
