It is ok to ask for accommodations

It is ok to ask for accommodations

So, I talk the talk but sometimes forget to walk the walk.  I am exhausted.  My life is non-stop.  Sometimes I do not know how I will get through the day.  Usually, I have a great disposition, but today was one of those days where I could not hold it together.  My daughter was frustrated with the amount of work she had to do.  She slipped into old habits of poor communication and I did not do the best job of responding.  My husband intervened and asked when you are going to ask for help.  Use her accommodations!

I often preach about the importance of leveling the field for persons with ASD,  Yet, I push my daughter to keep up with academic deadlines.  When my husband spoke so firmly on this issue, I actually listened, and I stopped and said OK.  I initially felt very defeated for having a rough day but then it felt good to be human and accept that I need help with our daily journey of parenting a child with Asperger’s syndrome.  Re-stated, my daughter needs help and accommodations were created to give her access.  It is ok to ask for help.  It is ok to accept accommodations!
