Positive Behavior Support
School is somewhat underway and if you are like me - you're edgy! A young woman I mentor who has a child on the spectrum asked what she should say to the teachers who care for her child. In sum - how do you teach a teacher how to teach your child? As a seasoned neurologist once shared - you cannot. BUT you can share some nuggets of wisdom.
Positive Behavior Support
Encourage the teacher to set firm expectations aligned with neuro-typical students in the same grade.
Ask the teacher to establish clear consequences for failure to meet expectations (Ex: work during lunch or after school)
To avoid confusion request clear communication vía email
It is helpful to suggest the teacher allow sensory breaks when appropriate
Make sure there is a team in place to review the content with the student
Ask for appropriate testing accommodations (time and environment)
If possible ask for a responsible Buddy to work with and
Enforce the use of HELPFUL words!
It all matters. Keep trying!
