Every year we have the same battles with our daughter. Like most people on the Autism Spectrum- Routine matters! For years our family spent a full week with our Aunt in DC. We loved the time away and there was never enough. Our tradition ended when our aunt passed away. So we began a new one. The issue was and is that my husband and I cannot take off the amount of time our daughter has. Her remedy- fly alone!
This is the 3rd year of her insisting that she needs to head to Chicago alone. Year one -she took off on her own. Year two-she left with my mother and this year-well she is “adulting” and decided to go it alone. The issue is she is no longer a minor. Thus, the support I was able to give her in the past is weaning off. It sounds simple but our daughter taking a leap of faith on her own and navigating the airport-start to finish was a win! We were ALL smiles when she successfully made it to see her sister. She was right when she said I’m GOING!
