So one of my favorite Christmas Songs from the movie White Christmas is the Sisters Song by Rosemary Clooney. No Judgement! The song is a tribute to sisters and the intricate relationship between them. As an only child I only witnessed the VERY INTERESTING dynamic sisters have through my mom and her crew and my daughters.
Recently I had a conversation with a colleague who has a sibling on the spectrum. She talked about her challenges as a child handling very difficult situations because of her sibling and often feeling obligated to be an adult before it was time. As partners and supporters of persons living with Autism Spectrum Disorder many of us think about sustainability- not individuality. Because our focus is on stability that leaves little room for anything else.
I know it was not easy for my older daughter who is a brilliant, creative, extrovert to navigate our family waters but I am beyond proud of her resiliency and compassion for her sister.
In sum- she could GET in our daughter’s face all day- but if someone else tried they were looking for trouble.
